Analysis of Etiology and Pathology
[Analysis 1]: Regarding amaurosis, according to “Annotations to the Book of Songs”: Having the pupil but unable to see is called “meng”, which is what we call amaurosis nowadays. In physiological terms: It is one type of color blindness. Among various colors, the patient can’t distinguish the color green.
[Analysis 2]: For amaurosis, the pupil is normal, without any damage or defect, and there is no obvious change. However, the patient can’t see objects. The reason is mostly due to internal injuries caused by the seven emotions, which damage the essence and blood, resulting in the eyes lacking nourishment. It is extremely difficult to treat. If it occurs in the elderly, after an illness, or due to insufficiency of the heart and kidney, even with treatment, it may not be cured. Night blindness is commonly known as “sparrow blindness” and also called “chicken blindness”. In ophthalmology, it is called “high wind 内障”. The symptom is that the patient can’t see at night but can see again in the morning. It is caused by deficiency of blood. The “Inner Canon of Huangdi” states: The eyes can see when they get blood nourishment. When there is a deficiency of blood, one can’t see. (Referenced from “Acupuncture and Moxibustion”)

Physiological Analysis
Regarding the pupil, in physiology, it is stated that: It is a small hole in the front of the eyeball. Through it, the light of external objects is received and reaches the macula lutea of the retina. The iris membrane constantly expands and contracts in response to the intensity of the light to increase or decrease the size of the pupil. The “眸” refers to the pupil in the eye.
