Analysis of Etiology and Pathology
[Analysis 1]: According to “The Golden Mirror”: For myopia, things near are clear while for hyperopia, things are dim. It is because the sunlight (yang qi) is insufficient and invaded by yin qi. Note: Those who can see things near clearly but are unable to see things far clearly are not born with myopia. It means that they didn’t have this symptom before, but now they can see things near clearly and things far dimly. This is because the yin qi of these people is relatively excessive, and the yang qi is insufficient. The yang qi is invaded by the yin qi, so the brilliance (of the eyes) cannot be exerted to see things far.
[Analysis 2]: This condition can be congenital or acquired. For congenital cases, it is more difficult to treat. For acquired cases, it may be caused by excessive use of eyesight, which damages the essence and blood, resulting in the eyes lacking nourishment. The “Inner Canon of Huangdi” states that the eyes can see when they get blood nourishment. This condition is mostly due to a deficiency of blood, loss of brilliance, resulting in insufficient liver blood, and thus this disease occurs.
Medical Cases
[Case 1]: Miss Tang, 19 years old, from Hunan Province, lived in Changfeng Third Village, Tucheng, Taipei County. She suffered from myopia and wore glasses with a degree of 100. On April 20, the 59th year of the Republic of China, she asked for diagnosis and treatment. After needling Muchuang, Xiaxi, Tianzhu, Fuliu, Guangming, and Ququan, she was cured after two treatments successively.
[Case 2]: Also on April 25, the 59th year of the Republic of China, Mr. Teng introduced four siblings of the Lü family from Taiwan who lived in Yuanlin Village, Tucheng Township, to come for the diagnosis and treatment of myopia. Lü Xiaoxia, 16 years old, suffered from myopia with a degree of 200. After needling 16 times, her vision recovered. Lü Xinhua, 13 years old, had a myopia degree of more than 100. After needling 7 times, his vision recovered. Lü Ximei, 11 years old, had a myopia degree of 80. After needling twice, her vision recovered. However, her elder brother, 18 years old, had a myopia degree of 700 to 800 and had been wearing myopia glasses for three years. After needling more than 20 times, there was no significant effect. Needling is effective for mild myopia, while the treatment effect is relatively poor for those with high myopia wearing glasses.
