Operation

(1) Lateral rolling method:
Apply the force with the back of the hand near the little finger side on the treatment area. Use the back of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the little finger as the fulcrum. Slightly flex and relax the elbow joint. Rely on the rotation of the forearm and the flexion and extension of the wrist joint to make the generated force act continuously on the treatment area.

(2) Vertical rolling method:
Apply the force with the back sides of the little finger, ring finger, middle finger and their metacarpophalangeal joints on the treatment area. Use the back of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the little finger as the fulcrum. Keep the elbow joint straight. Rely on the rotation of the forearm and the flexion and extension of the wrist joint to make the generated force act continuously on the treatment area.

Key Points of the Movement

(1) For the lateral rolling method, the upper limb should be relaxed and the elbow joint should be slightly flexed; for the vertical rolling method, the elbow joint should be kept straight.

(2) The force-applying part should be in the shape of a sphere or a bottle.

(3) The force-applying part should adhere to the treatment area to avoid dragging back and forth.

(4) The rolling amplitude of the hand should be around 120°. That is, when the wrist joint is flexed, it should roll outward by 80°; when the wrist joint is extended, it should roll inward by 40°.

(5) The rotation of the forearm and the flexion and extension of the wrist joint should be coordinated.

Clinical Application

When using this method, attention should be paid to the coordination between the flexion and extension of the wrist joint and the rotation of the forearm. At the same time, it should also be noted that when applying this method, the force-applying part should adhere to the treatment area.

Requirements and Precautions

The rolling manipulation method has the effects of relieving muscle spasm and eliminating fatigue, and is mainly used on the areas with relatively thick muscles such as the neck, shoulders, waist, back and limbs.
