Epimedii Folium dispels wind, dispels cold and removes dampness, treats wind-cold-dampness arthralgia, and has the effect of tonifying the liver and kidney and assisting the primordial yang. This herb has a pungent and sweet taste and a warm nature. It can treat the arthralgia pain of the tendons and bones caused by the deficiency of the liver and kidney and the invasion of wind-cold-dampness pathogens, the numbness due to wind-dampness constraint and spasm, as well as the impotence and infertility caused by the deficiency of kidney yang. It has the effects of dispelling wind-dampness, strengthening the tendons and bones, and warming the kidney and invigorating yang. All pungent and warm herbs that assist yang and are dry and vigorous have the drawback of injuring yin and promoting fire. Therefore, patients with exuberant fire due to yin deficiency should use it with caution.
[Dosage] 5-10g.
[Usage] Decoct for oral administration, soak in liquor, make into ointment, or make into pills or powders.
[Precautions] It is not suitable for those with exuberant fire due to yin deficiency.
[Compatibility] Epimedii Folium combined with Psoraleae Fructus can tonify yang and secure essence, and is used to treat kidney yang deficiency, impotence, premature ejaculation, enuresis, and frequent urination; combined with Morindae Officinalis Radix, it can tonify kidney yang, strengthen tendons and bones, and dispel wind-dampness, and is used to treat deficiency of kidney yang, wind-cold-dampness arthralgia, and cold pain in the waist and knees; combined with Clematidis Radix, it can dispel wind-cold, strengthen the waist and knees, and dredge the channels and collaterals, and is used to treat wind-dampness arthralgia and numbness of the limbs; combined with Lycii Fructus and Cuscutae Semen, it can tonify the kidney and assist yang, and is used to treat weakness of the waist and knees and impotence.
[Supplementary Prescriptions]
- Epimedii Folium Liquor (from “Food Therapy for the Heart”) is used to treat impotence or hemiplegia. Take 500g of Epimedii Folium and soak it in 5000ml of spirits for oral administration.
- Xianlingpi Powder (from “Taiping Holy Benevolent Prescriptions”) is used to treat the wandering pain due to wind, which comes and goes irregularly. Take 30g each of Epimedii Folium, Clematidis Radix, Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Cinnamomi Cortex, and Xanthii Fructus. Pound them together into powder. Take 3g each time and mix it with warm liquor for oral administration.
[Note] Raw Epimedii Folium has a pungent and sweet taste and a warm nature, and has a strong ability to dispel wind and overcome dampness, and is mostly used for wind-cold-dampness arthralgia; when stir-fried with sheep oil, it has a sweet and slightly pungent taste and a warm nature, and has a strong ability to warm the kidney and invigorate yang, and is mostly used for impotence due to kidney deficiency and infertility caused by cold uterus.
