Deviation of the Mouth and Eye
Mnemonic Verse
The deviation of the mouth and eye is truly pitiful,
Tears flow from the eyes and saliva from the mouth.
Yingxiang, paired with Jiachengjiang,
Dicang and Jiache can remedy the deviation.
Introduction of Acupoints
Yingxiang: Located one cun and five fen below the eye, one cun diagonally upward from Heliao, and five fen outside the nasal cavity.
Jiachengjiang: Located one cun beside Chengjiang acupoint.
Dicang: Located four fen beside the corner of the mouth.

Jiache: Located eight fen below the ear, at the end of the curved cheek, in the front depression. There is an opening when lying on the side with the mouth open.
Analysis of Etiology and Pathology
[Analysis 1]: According to “The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion: The Main Points of Treatment, Article 29”, this disease may be caused by sleeping drunk in the wind, with the evil wind entering the meridians and collaterals and phlegm – fluid flowing and stagnating; or by anger damaging the liver; or by improper sexual activities. As a result, the corner of the mouth droops, there is a speech disorder, the tongue inclines towards the affected side, and saliva flows.
Clinical Experience of Sun Peirong
[Experience 1]: I have treated many patients with this disease. Those in the early stage of the disease can be cured within a few days. For those with a more serious condition, frequent acupuncture treatments are required to achieve a cure. In mild cases of the disease, there is deviation of the mouth and eye, and the patients feel inconvenience in eating. In severe cases, there are tears and saliva flowing. Even more seriously, half of the face, the head, the neck, the face, and the ear are all painful. In the most severe cases, the patients cry out in pain, and they can’t sleep or eat peacefully. There are patients of all ages and genders.
Medical Cases
[Case 1]: Mr. Gao, 44 years old, from Feixian County, Shandong Province, lived in Dongcunli, Donggang Road, Yilan County, Taiwan Province. In the autumn of 1951, he suffered from the disease of deviation of the mouth and eye. He had been in the hospital for more than a month but showed no improvement, and the condition was getting worse day by day. He couldn’t speak, his tongue protruded far out of his mouth, and the right eyeball on the affected side was ruptured, flowing out black water. His breath was faint, and the arrangements for his funeral had been made. Coincidentally, Mr. Zhang, his fellow villager (living on Keelung Road, Taipei City), invited me to go and treat him. I took the express train and didn’t arrive at Mr. Gao’s place until about 1 o’clock in the morning. At that time, the patient’s right eyeball was already ruptured and blind. I immediately started needling Dicang, Jiache, Yingxiang, and Jiachengjiang. After continuous acupuncture treatment, he was cured and became as strong as before. However, due to the late treatment, his right eye remained blind, which is a great pity.
[Case 2]: Mr. Liu, 57 years old, originally from Wendeng County, Shandong Province, lived in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, South Korea. He suffered from the disease of deviation of the mouth and eye. On October 18, 1968, he took a plane to Taiwan and then came to our clinic for treatment. After needling the above acupoints and several continuous acupuncture treatments, he was cured.
[Case 1]: Mr. Shen, an American, and his wife, Ms. Feng, 28 years old, lived on Xinyi Road, Taipei City, Taiwan Province. She had suffered from the disease of deviation of the mouth and eye for more than a month. On September 24, 1968, she came for treatment. After needling the above acupoints several times, she was cured.
