- Wind – Cold Sore Throat
Mnemonic Verse
The wind – cold sore throat is caused by the accumulation of wind – cold. The swelling is as big as a plum, and it’s hard to lower the head. Prick Shangyang, Shaoshang, Guanchong, and Shaochong with a three – edged needle to let out blood and avoid suffering.
Introduction to Acupoints

Shangyang
- Shangyang: On the inner side of the index finger, at a distance of about the width of a leek leaf from the corner of the fingernail.
- Shaoshang: On the inner side of the thumb, at a distance of about the width of a leek leaf from the corner of the fingernail.
- Shaochong: At the tip of the inner side of the little finger, at a distance of about the width of a leek leaf from the corner of the fingernail.
- Guanchong: On the outer side of the ring finger, at a distance of about the width of a leek leaf from the corner of the fingernail.
Etiology and Pathogenesis Analysis
- Analysis 1: For those with swollen throats, it is called wind – cold sore throat, commonly known as fire – sore throat, and the causes vary. There may be excessive phlegm and saliva blocking, inability to open the mouth, inability to speak, or red face and swollen cheeks. Or it is difficult to swallow even a drop of water. For example, anger and emotional imbalance can stir up liver – fire, and excessive fatigue can stir up heart – fire. All these can cause the upward movement of fire – qi, resulting in throat wind, also known as sore throat, which is all related to fire.
Medical Cases
- Case 1: Mr. Liu, 45 – year – old, from Weifang County, Shandong Province, lived in Xindian Town, Taipei County. He suffered from wind – cold sore throat. The swelling gathered under the lower jaw, inside the two Yingxiang acupoints. It was as big as a plum, numb and painful. It was difficult for him to lower his head, and he had difficulty eating. On May 6, 1967, he came here for treatment. Shangyang, Shaoshang, Guanchong, and Shaochong were punctured with a three – edged needle to let out blood. After that, the swelling subsided, the pain stopped, and he recovered.
- Case 2: Ms. Zhang, 50 – year – old, from Andong, lived on Dunhua North Road, Taipei. She suffered from a swollen and painful throat and had difficulty eating. On October 17, 1970, she came to me for treatment. After two treatments by needling the above – mentioned acupoints, she recovered.
